Pleased

We purchased this product for our three daughters for Christmas this year. It was much cheaper after Thanksgiving than what it is curaintly listed for. We bought 3 kits, but at the current price we would have only purchased one! You could easily get the same ingredients through other online sources and make the same product.
We do not agree with other reviewers. First, this was very fun to make and we did not find it to be messy! What project do you do with children that doesn't end up being at least a little bit messy? What adult doesn't cook something in the kitchen without making some type of a mess? In all honesty, this project wasn't messy for our girls.
Yes, this is not very "educational" per se. I really think for our purposes that this complaint by other reviewers is ridiculous. Our girls just wanted to make their own lip balm. This fit the bill. It says "do it yourself lip balm."
It was very easy and not time consuming. We did all three kits in about 45 minutes.
We would have to say that when melting the shea butter, safflower oil, and bee's wax; that you cannot get it too hot. We used a sauce pan over medium heat and had to switch to low heat. Just enough to melt! I could not imagine trying to use the microwave to do this melting as it would be much harder to control the heat! If you have a hot plate to melt the ingredients on then it would be perfect. When we overheated the ingredients and poured it into the plastic bottles, some of the bottles melted. This was a disappointment, but it was our fault, not the manufacturer's (although there was no warning about that...). We ended up having to use the empty bottle for the shea butter, which is made of a heavier plastic, to compensate.
Another drawback was that the kit is supposed to make 5 lip balms, we were only able to get 4 out of each kit. Not a big deal unless you were buying this for the purposes of getting specifically 5 balms out of it.
For these reasons, we gave the kit an overall rating of 4.
In addition, this is a great beginner's kit. We will be buying the ingredients seperately from other sources next time if the kit remains $25. At Thanksgiving time it was $10 and that is a perfect price. Otherwise, for our three girls to make the balms it would be cheaper to get the shea butter, safflower oil, beeswax, essential oils and droppers seperately. Then again, isn't that how most "kits" usually work?

Wasn't what I expected

I was a bit disappointed with this product. First not everything was in the sealed box, that was a let down. Then there was not much "science" to making the lip balm. I expected this to be a bit more involved and was looking for a few hours of fun with my niece. It's also very messy but I wasn't worried about messy, I was looking for fun science. The balm itself was ok but nothing to rave over. I was just expecting a little more to the whole kit and process.

It may seem a littlr pricey but as a one off its noad and when you see all the ingredients, its a good value. I would recommend.
